Ryan Clark says NFL players, including some of his teammates with the Pittsburgh Steelers, turn to smoking marijuana for a variety of reasons, especially as a means to relieve pain and manage stress.
Clark, a 12-year veteran, discussed the topic of marijuana use and the league's testing system Thursday morning on ESPN's "First Take."
"I know guys on my team who smoke," Clark said. "And it's not a situation where you think, 'Oh, these are guys trying to be cool.' These are guys who want to do it recreationally.
"A lot of it is stress relief. A lot of it is pain and medication. Guys feel like, 'If I can do this, it keeps me away from maybe Vicodin, it keeps me away from pain prescription drugs and things that guys get addicted to.' Guys look at this as a more natural way to heal themselves, to stress relieve and also to medicate themselves for pain. Guys are still going to do it."
Clark also expressed his views on Twitter.
Clark also agreed with recent comments by New York Jets cornerback Antonio Cromartie, who suggested the league is waging a lost cause in banning the substance, while also saying the league's testing system isn't all that effective.
"It's 100 percent true. They're fighting a losing battle. The testing isn't stringent," Clark said. "There is one random test during OTAs and minicamps during the offseason, and everybody will be tested early in training camp. After that, there are no more tests. So guys understand the ways to get around failing a drug test."
ESPN NFL analyst Mark Brunell, joining "SportsCenter," offered a different opinion on the topic than Clark and Cromartie.
"There's really no place for marijuana in the NFL," Brunell said. "It is harmful. It hurts brain function. It hurts brain development. Marijuana can ruin lives. I'm very much against it."
Brunell, a former quarterback, also said marijuana testing should be random and that the league should conduct it more often.
Marijuana became a hot-button issue at the Super Bowl, as both teams -- the Seattle Seahawks and Denver Broncos -- hail from states that legalized marijuana. Seahawks coach Pete Carroll created headlines by saying he agreed with the notion the league should investigate medicinal marijuana to see if it can help players. Medicinal marijuana is legal in 20 states, plus the District of Columbia.
Commissioner Roger Goodell, addressing the issue last Friday at his annual Super Bowl news conference, downplayed the possibility of the league lifting marijuana from its list of banned substances.
"It is still an illegal substance on a national basis," Goodell said. "It's something that is part of the collective bargaining agreement with the players. It is questionable as to the positive impacts, in the face of the very strong evidence of the negative effects, including addictions and other issues.
"We'll continue to follow the medicine. Our experts right now are not indicating that we should change our policy in any way. We are not actively considering that at this point in time. But if it goes down the road sometime, that's something that we would never take off the table."

Getting enough hydrogen peroxide inside the cancer cells is key
It has been clinically demonstrated that the spread or metastatis of cancer is “inversely proportional to the amount of oxygen around the cancer cells.” That means that the more oxygen, the slower the cancer spreads. The Food and Drug Administration is taking a hard look at testosterone treatments. Millions of men use hormone-replacement therapies to boost sex drive, energy, muscle building, and mood. But multiple recent studies show that they may also ratchet up the risk of heart attack, stroke, and death, prompting the FDA to question their safety.
Over the past decade, drug companies have been aggressively marketing testosterone gels, creams, patches, and injections as magic bullets for conditions linked to "low T." The idea that dosing your body with testosterone can cure lackluster libido, sluggishness, sleep anomalies, and other problems has more men than ever buying in. Prescriptions for testosterone treatments have increased more than fivefold since 2001.
But regardless of whether these products deliver on their promises, more and more evidence suggests they may do more harm than good. The most recent study, which has the FDA worried, found that testosterone therapies doubled the heart attack risk for men over age 65 after only three months on the drugs. Heart attack risk also doubled for younger guys with a history of heart disease. Previous trials have shown similar increases in cardiovascular risks, but the size and scope of this study – more than 55,000 men – make this news especially troubling.
Experts also fear than many men using testosterone therapies don't really need them. Testosterone levels decline naturally once you hit your mid-30s, and some younger guys have conditions like hypogonadism, in which they don't produce enough of the hormone. However, just because levels are low doesn't mean they're too low. Many guys don't really need medication, doctors say, especially if they're not experiencing several side effects. But even if you do have low sex drive, low energy, or other unwanted issues, something other than low testosterone may be to blame.
If you take testosterone, don't stop without first talking with your doctor. If you're considering treatment, get your testosterone levels tested and discuss the pros and cons. Together, you can decide whether the benefits will likely outweigh the potential risks.

The Best Natural Testosterone Boosters
Anabolic steroids nearly guarantees increases in muscular strength and mass, when dosed appropriately. Testosterone deficiency decreases quality of life and is linked to health problems such as diabetes, depression, erectile dysfunction, and cardiovascular disease. It also increases the risk of premature death. T-boosting supplements are big sellers that are popular with athletes, aging adults, and men and women who hope to boost sexual performance.
Physiologic Mechanisms
Many techniques boost testosterone naturally. These include stimulation of the testes and testosterone-controlling hormones in the brain. Supplement makers have marketed T-boosting products for decades. They weren't very popular prior to the late 1980s because of the easy availability of anabolic steroids. Changes in the law made steroids controlled substances in 1990, which left law-abiding bodybuilders struggling to improve. Whey protein and creatine monohydrate supplements presented a viable but less effective alternative to steroids for boosting muscle strength and size. During the late 1990s, steroidal pro-hormones entered the market with variable results. Most failed to increase muscle strength and size, but caused some of the same side-effects as steroids. Revisions to the Anabolic Steroid Control Act extended to these pro-hormones, as well as the banned substance lists of most sports organizations, removing them from the market. Of course, marketers continue to challenge the confines of these lists with "designer pro-hormones."
Raising T Levels
Recently, supplement companies developed testosterone-boosting formulas that claimed to increase testosterone. They marketed these products to healthy, young adult men. It is crucial to define the target population because ingredients that might benefit someone with low testosterone levels may have no effect on healthy young men with normal or high levels. Also, the correct dose is critical to an effective formula. It is impossible to provide an all-inclusive list, but the most prevalent ingredients are discussed below.
Boron. The mineral was introduced as a testosterone booster in the 1980s, based on human data involving postmenopausal females and men over age 45. Though not classically defined as an essential mineral, this early research demonstrated improvements in bone-building markers, including increased calcium, vitamin D, testosterone, and estrogens. Bodybuilders experienced no perceivable benefits at 3 milligrams per day but it was effective at 10 milligrams. While the evidence is mixed, a minimum daily dose of 10 milligrams of boron appears to increase testosterone in some people.
Tribulus terrestris. This herb gained notice as a testosterone-booster based upon unconfirmed reports by scientists from Bulgaria. "Trib" has long been used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) as an aphrodisiac, and increases in sexual behavior have been documented in animal studies. However, "trib" failed to provide any T-boosting effect or strength increases in young, adult men, either by itself or as part of a combined product. "Trib" does not produce measurable changes in T or performance in young men. It remains part of many testosterone-boosting supplements despite lackluster consumer reviews.
Zinc and Magnesium. Victor Conte will always be remembered as the central character in the BALCO scandal that devastated the careers of many athletes- including several Major League Baseball players and Olympians. He also promoted a dietary supplement called ZMA that supposedly increased testosterone in college football players. The science behind ZMA seemed credible because zinc, magnesium, and vitamin B-6- the components of ZMA- are essential co-factors in natural T production. A 1999 study reported that ZMA increased strength and testosterone, compared to a placebo group that experienced an overall decrease in T. Later studies failed that ZMA increased testosterone levels.
Creatine monohydrate. Creatine supplements boost muscle mass and strength because they increase cell energy levels and stimulate protein synthesis. Creatine has additional properties that support muscle anabolism, either directly or indirectly. Creatine-loaded men showed 50 percent increases in post-exercise T and growth hormone (GH) levels. This may have been caused by increases in creatine-stimulated exercise capacity rather than any effect of creatine on testosterone production. Even though the effect is indirect, creatine can potentially increase T and GH.
Vitamin D. Vitamin D is an anabolic hormone that helps build bone mass. Bone density is as important to bodybuilding as muscle density because of the strain that muscles put on the skeleton. High doses of vitamin D decrease muscle and joint pain in women treated with aromatase inhibitors for breast cancer. Drug-enhanced bodybuilders commonly use aromatase inhibitors to decrease the conversion of testosterone to estrogen. Overweight men with low T given vitamin D supplements (3300 IU/day) increased total T by 25 percent and the more powerful free T by 20 percent. Additionally, vitamin D increases androgen receptors in muscle.
D-Aspartic Acid (DAA). DAA increased T in rats by increasing levels of a testosterone controlling hormone (LH), as well as directly stimulating the testes to produce more T. In humans, DAA actually decreased T levels in men with normal T levels, so this supplement is probably not effective in healthy, young athletes. DAA definitely plays a role in T production, but appears only to be effective for men with low to low-normal T.
Trigonella foenum-graecum (TFG). This herb, more commonly known as fenugreek, is often included in T-boosting supplements because of studies showing positive effects on libido, sexual function, and strength in weight-trained men. TFG caused small increases in testosterone. TFG inhibits T breakdown, which prolongs its effects in muscle. The improvements in libido, arousal, and orgasm may be more relevant to the actions of TFG than its performance or modest effects on circulating T increases.
The Search Continues
The search for potent, natural T-boosters continues. For men with low or low-normal testosterone, DAA or TFG may offer some effects. Adequate intake of micronutrients, such as boron, magnesium, zinc, vitamin B-6, and vitamin D, are important for maintaining normal testosterone production. None of these substances will turbo-charge natural T production in men with normal testosterone levels.

Цвет кала зависит от количества желчи, поступающей из желчного пузыря в 12-перстную кишку. Если желчь по каким-либо причинам не поступает в кишечник, то кал обесцвечивается и в некоторых случаях становится белым. Обесцвечивание кала является одним из проявлений желтухи.
Увеличение размеров живота
Увеличение размеров живота, связанное со скоплением жидкости носит название асцит. При заболеваниях печени асцит развивается в результате повышения давления в системе воротной вены, по которой венозная кровь поступает в печень от всех непарных органов брюшной полости.
Кожный зуд
Кожный зуд является одним из проявлений желтухи и обусловлен раздражающим действием желчных кислот, которые накапливаются в крови. При заболеваниях печени кожный зуд усиливается в ночное время и носит генерализованный характер, т.е. распространяется на всю поверхность тела.
Усталость
Кто из нас не уставал на работе или не мог сосредоточиться? Сама по себе усталость или снижение работоспособности еще не говорят о заболевании печени, но в сочетании с другими, более специфическими симптомами могут указывать не ее неблагополучие.
Сосудистые звездочки и синяки
В печени образуется большое количество веществ, в т.ч. факторы свертывания крови. Заболевания печени сопровождаются нарушением образования факторов свертывания, в отсутствии которых на коже появляются сосудистые звездочки и синяки.
Желтые белки глаз
У здорового человека белки глаз (склеры) белого цвета. Появление желтой окраски склер является одним из проявлений желтухи и сопровождает многие заболевания печени. Первыми, как правило, реагируют именно склеры, а уже потом появляется желтое окрашивание кожи.
Плохое питание
Для того чтобы сохранить здоровье печени, необходимо правильно питаться. Нерегулярное и несбалансированное питание приводит к нарушению работы печени. В пищевом рационе должны обязательно присутствовать свежие овощи и фрукты, достаточное количество белка, ненасыщенные жиры (рыба, оливковое масло).
